Private Sewing Lessons

Have you always wanted to sew? Do you have a sewing machine sitting in a closet or in a garage that you don't know how to use? I  offer private, one on one sewing lessons.   Sewing is fun and a great skill to learn !

  •  Learn on my machine or bring yours. I use a computerized Brother 450Q. It is extremely user friendly and easy to learn on. If you do not have machine , it is a great idea to use mine for a  few lessons to try out the features and find out what you would like in a machine.  There are many great sewing machines for beginners that do not require a great investment. I can assist you in researching and purchasing a machine.

  •  I teach all ages. I start students as young as 10 yrs old. For younger students 12 and under, I recommend 1/2 hour lessons.  Tweens and teens,  1 hour lessons seem to work best.  Adults enjoy two hour lessons.  My students range in skill level from absolute beginner to intermediate sewers in need of learning specific skills. I work with you to teach you the skills you need to be able to acheive your goals.  Lessons for students of any age always include much  discussion about safety.

  • My fees for lessons are $20 per hour. That includes all threads, fabric, zippers and other notions we would use during the lessons. When we go on to other projects, such as a pillows or purses or clothing , you get to shop for  fabric for that. I send you with shopping "homework" : exactly how much fabric to buy, what kind and any other goodies we will add into the project. A half hour lesson is $10.00, a 1 and 1/2 hour lesson is $30.00, etc.

  •  The first lesson or two is getting aquainted with the sewing machine especially if you haven't used one  much  before. We load bobbins, thread the machine, and go over scenarios where it might not be sewing like you want and what to do about it.  We go over all of the stitches it can do, what all of the attachments are for and how to use the different feet. This typically takes two hours. When you leave you will be seeing stitches all the way home! I pack as much  info into you as will fit :).
Lessons after that  include hemming, elastic casings, and buttonholes & zippers . We can make pillows, purses and children's clothing. Projects are designed to assist you in learning and applying techniques learned in previous lessons. Once you are confident with   the basic techniques, we can move onto pattern reading and sewing from patterns. Lessons are tailored to your specific needs.

  • Lessons are in my smoke free   home in my new beautfiul studio in Portsmouth ,VA  in the Sterling Point nieghborhood, just off High Street, not far from Churchland & Western Branch.  I have also discovered that driving time from Great Bridge, Deep Creek and even some parts of VA Beach are only 20-30 minutes.
  • Lesson days and times  are flexible. I teach weekdays, weeknights and every other weekend. Some of my students like to come every week, some  every other week. How often and for how long you like to have lessons is up to you!

NEW!!!  I now also offer "DIY Assistance"! This is when you have sewing experience but have planned a project that you need help with. Or you started the project and realized you really have no idea what you are doing.Laughing I am happy to rescue  you!
